The locker found in
the rear of the D40,N50,A60 is made by GKN for Dana. The Dana M226 axle
(formerly called Super 44)
is in all these Nissans and not sure what else. Dana called it the
Super Dana 44 back in the 90s. The locker is an electric
locker that has spiders gears for unlocked differential action.
Unfortunately these strip the spiders when wheeled hard.
Can not
find replacement spiders. Nissan Dealers do not list this
locker. Its not in FSM. I could not find parts or pictures in FAST or
FSM. It is like this locker does not exist. So most people trash
this lockers and put in a ARB, Spartan or down grade to LSD like True
tracs. I talked to GKN and they stated the locker is only available to
Nissan dealers as a unit. No parts exist. So we upgraded to a Spartan
locker. You need an open carrier for this lunchbox style locker.
The
carrier and spiders is available at any dealer put picked up a used one
for $50 from a 32 spline Titan. Some people pull the open carrier in
favor of LSD. The d40 and
n50 have different length axles on each side compared to the open m226.
So a shorter Right side axle is needed. The Titan also has 3
sizes. Since it only has one axle for both sides if open. And only one
new
part number if locked. But the Titan only used the 32 spline for 04-07.
Then they went 35spline in 2008.
First remove the ring gear. Then there is 2
Screws that hold the carrier together.
The side gears are the strangest I have seen.
Appear to be diecast.

The spiders strip. Again not hardedned? Never
seen this before. I have shattered lots of spiders.

Found this is an old Dana service guide dated
7/2000. Nissan did not use the M226 until 2004 in the Titan A60 and
2005 D40 and N50. Dana renamed all
the models from 44 to M216 etc. Basically the metric ring gear size.

Here is the Spartan locker from
US gear. It should fit all 3 vehicles not sure why they only think it
fits Titans.
Its similar to the popular Lock Right locker by powertraxx.
Here is the axle stripped down. Its not the typical backing
plate.
We put in some 4.10s to handle the 38x14.5s. Stock on the d40 is
3.3 axle code CC.
Here is the comparison of the gear sets.
Note the crush sleeve is different. The crush sleeves needs 400lb foot
pounds to compress. After snapping breaker bars we used the press to
collapse the crush sleeve
The axle shafts are all different lengths on the M226 LOCKED M226 and
same length on the OPEN. So you have to replace the right axle. Its
about 1/2 inch too long. The OPEN locker has the carrier in the
center,EDL is off to the side.

The axle seals and bearings are the same on all 3 vehicles. Only the
backing plates and tone rings differ from auto to manual and vehicle to
vehicle.
