3 link rears suspension on a Nissan D21 King Cab Hardbody

updated 9/19/2009

I Needed more travel from the rear suspension. I also wanted a smoother ride. So I decided to 3 link the rear similar to the front suspension. I will use DOM for all the links. I have a spare 5 link pathfinder axle and compete frame including gas tank. But I like the bigger gas tank were it is. The D21 trucks have a nice factory flat bottom. The trick will be working around the gas tank. The 96-2004  (r50) Pathfinders have the gas tank in the same location and have a nice 5 link. So it is possible.  .

Parts needed

  • 2x2 1/8 tube steel shock crossmember

  • 1/2 " bolts and nuts to relocate shocks

  • 3" 3/16" dom for link hangers

  • coil / link axle mount  BRK-1056 - ballistic

  • Coil springs

  • 11.6" travel rs5005 shocks / Trailmaster 62480

  • 2.5" johnny joints and some poly ends

  • Black spray paint

First step was to relocate the shocks. I decided to remove the day for a week to allow easy access and planning. Just 6 bolts, one wire connector, one ground strap, 3 bolts on gas filler and it pops right off with a hoist.

Original shock mounts are staggered. I had already relocated the upper mounts years ago to allow for 2" longer shocks.

I removed all the new and old shock mounts.

I had to clean up all the wires and brake lines. Going to convert rear T to pathfinder style and use a stainless line. Same as front pair.

The pathfinder has a replaceable hose. The d21 does not.

Made a new upper crossmember from 2". The is only 1.5" clearance so I dropped it down 1/2. Drilled 6 holes for some options. I used 70deg just like OEM pathfinder setup.

The lower mounts are 1/2 bolts welded to axle. I think 4.5" long.

I moved the muffler over to clear the shocks. I relocated one hook 14" to the left and flipped over the other one.

This is the future track bar mount. Its a ballistic track bar mount.

Test drive with new shocks.

The axle lower link and coil mounts are also ballistic. Similar to the ones up front.
