Kids Loft Bed based on a Nissan D21 Hardbody King Cab 4x4

This is a twin size bed based on the Nissan Hardbody. I built this in a month as a surprise for My Sons 4th birthday in 2004.

Specs: 

  • Working winch

  • Working doors

  • Working tailgate/table

  • Steering Wheel

  • Sun Roof

  • 24"x1" Tires

  • twin size bed

       

After 11 years my Son outgrew the bed and we are making him a new Truck and bed.

UPDATE 2006: added some 34" leg extensions and now at Bunk bed height.

   

 

 

Ladder brackets I made from some 1 1/2 1/8 steel.

Twin size loft truck bed Plans:

Wood Material list:

  • 2x4s - Vertical pieces, ladder, roof supports etc.

  • 4x4s - Legs
  • 2x6s - Main horizontal members - the frame
  • 1/2" MDF 2' x 4' sheets
  • 1" MDF 24" circles - Wheels
  • 3/4" Plywood 2' x 4' sheets - floor for mattress

Steel Material list:

  • Actual bed corner brackets - www.rockler.com $11.00 for 8 pieces. Enough for one bed.
  • 1/2" bolts - Wheels to suspension
  • 3" screws - wood to wood
  • 1 5/8" screws - wood to wood
  • 1 1/2 angle iron. -  ladder brackets and 
  • 1/4" Brass bolts - Connect roof to cab
  • 3 1/2 brass Door hinges - Doors
  • brass plated piano hinge - Tailgate
  • Brass plated latchs - doors and tailgate latchs

Paint Material list:

  • Oil based enamel paint. Black (Frame, tires, ladders)
  • White (Lights)
  • Yellow (Clearance lights)
  • Gray (Grill)
  • Aluminum (Bumpers)
  • Red (Body).
  • Latex primer

Misc Material list:

  • Wood glue - hold wood to wood
  • Winch - Harbor Freight $14.00
  • Rope - to replace steel cable in winch. $2.00
  • Steering Wheel - Swing and slide brand from Lowes.  $12.00

Instructions:

  1. Build 2 ends first
  2. Cut 4x4 posts to correct height
  3. Cut 2x6
  4. Router all 2x wood with round over bit before assembly.
  5. Sand all wood before assembling if possible. 
  6. Build sides
  7. And steel corner brackets.
  8. Connect ends to sides
  9. Attach skins
  10. Build roof
  11. Build doors
  12. Build suspension pieces
  13. Cut triangles out of wheels
  14. Build ladder
  15. Build lights
  16. Install lights
  17. Primer
  18. Paint
  19. Install winch
  20. Install steering wheel
  21. Disassemble and place in bedroom.
